Boasting in the Cross

Why is it called Good Friday? Some say that the word “good” is a corruption of the word “God” in the same way that the words “Good Bye” is a corruption of God be with ye. Some say that the word “good” is another way of saying “holy”.  I’m sure that there is some truth to both of these theories, but when we speak of Good Friday, we mean that what happened 2000 years ago was something good.  But whose good, it can’t be speaking about Jesus, his suffering was more than anyone could have endured. It could not have been for the Father, for he had to forsake his only begotten Son. It could not have been for Satan, for at the cross, his head was bruised. So it must be for us. All that Jesus suffered was for us. No wonder Paul tells us that his only boast is in the cross of Christ (Gal. 6:4).
